I don't remember a single thing about this book. Is this the one with the couple who has the adulterous affair and then one of them dies? Or is this the one with the dog-boy (or was it a dog-girl)? I think that was Sexing the Cherry... clearly I need to re-read this book. All I am sure of is that it's not as strong - or as memorable - as Winterson's other works.

This novel is bursting with scope and brimming with possibilities and impossibilities. The prose is limitless, there is no boundary or barrier that the words do not cross or do not hope to cross. At once, it is a homage and parody of works preceding it; it is also capable of standing on its own as something entirely new. This is to be free, this is to flow. As the story warns of the dangers of cliché, it is entirely devoid of any. The sexless unnamed narrator, their lingering memories of romances profound and insignificant, and the unknown fates of Louise and other characters add on to the ever-prevailing pervasive sense of mystery shrouding this one acid-high-cerebral-dream of a novel.

“It has been a long day for you to find me. You are bruised all over. Burst figs are the livid purple of your skin.”
Jeanette Winterson’s writing is so sacred to me, rarely do you find lesbian fiction like her’s. I want every depiction of sex to be compared to this. So many incredible passages about love, enmeshment, grief, food and eroticism.

Ugh. Winterson’s expansive understanding of love is tender and crushing. I felt myself between these pages. So rare to find a book like this.
