Very slow in the beginning. I had trouble getting into the book, not really caring about the characters or the story but at the 60% mark it definitely started to pick up for me. The last third of this book was great and made it worth not stopping earlier. It ended on a cliffhanger, the stories finally connected. I would like to know how it ends but I have not yet decided when and if I will read the second book, though I lean more towards reading it sometime in the future

This was my introduction to John Gwynne and I absolutely loved it. Sometimes multiple POVs can be tough and you end up just wanting one story, but I loved all three storylines here. Orka is obviously BA, but I also loved Varg and watching him find his place in the Bloodsworn. The storyline with Elvar was my least favorite, but I am now intrigued because of what was set up for book 2.

It took me awhile to get into this, but once I did I was hooked. There were a few things I disliked about the book. There seemed to be a lot of repetition. An excessive focus on weapons, hairstyles, and thought cages. But, I was also able to picture every single scene, so obviously the story telling was great. I’m extremely excited to read book 2.

3.5 stars, some prose choices I wasn't entirely fond like the italic thought bubbles and sometimes too in depth descriptions of characters that weren't important and redescribing existing characters, or reusing of descriptive language. The last 50 pages was good enough to give it that respectful +.5 increase and my intrigue to possibly read the next book. Orka started pretty flat for me but by the end I was sold, Varg and Co. really got my attention closer to the end. Not bad over all.
