This book is told from three people.
Ren who is trying to find his former master's finger so that it can be buried with his father's finger.
William Ren's new master who is a womanizer and leads woman on.
Ji Lin who is working as a dancehall girl to help her mother pay back her debts.

This book was very fascinating. And very informative about Malaysia culture.

There was something there, but I got lost. The story was always out of reach, I could not get into it, and I loved The Ghost Bride so much. I finished it, and was not sure if I actually read the book. It took me a whole 2 weeks to read this, and while I enjoyed parts of it, I was indifferent to the rest of it, which is so much worse than hating it.

Not for me. Do try, it might work for you though.

The mystery and the overall story of this book is really good and I enjoyed all of the reveals. To be honest I didn't really see most of it coming until the reveal which is always a great thing to me. If I can tell it's not a really big mystery then.

I loved the pacing of this and how they connected things near the end as it all made you go OH! OH MY GOD.

Most of the characters in this story are Wild. Like just genuinely terrible people or just do terrible things. This brings me to the thing that really weirded me out about this book.

Ji Lin's mother marries her stepfather and her stepfather has a son already. So Shin is her stepbrother. And the two have a relationship. Technically they aren't related by blood. It's still really weird. I don't like it it makes me feel gross. I don't like how possessive Shin is, I like How Ji Lin is basically very blunt about how she feels about some of his comments. But the relationship doesn't feel good to me.

This book is really good I just have a lot of issues with the relationship in the book. I'm interested in reading Choo's The Ghost Bride. If that one has another weird relationship Choo may not be the author for me, but I'll see.

Would've been a 4.5, didn't vibe with the end relationship - really enjoyed the story

This book was a recommendation by ChatGPT. Not a fan of the whole step-siblings thing despite it being a sweet relationship, but I like that it is obviously written by someone familiar with Malaya's history and norms.

I like Ren and Ah Long's dynamic. I also did not manage to catch the twists before they happened.

The whole plot is alright, interesting enought where I want to read more. It does a great job at weaving everything together. However, it can feel a bit slow at times, leading me to skim.

When I was not getting irked at the step-sibling romance, I was enjoying this mystery.

I really enjoyed this book! The first half was a little bit slow as you had to get to know the world you were placed in, as it was a country that was not my own. Once the story picked up and you were able to piece together the two perspectives it began to fly by. Choo's writing was so immersive and captivating. The ending was semi-ambiguous as it leaves the characters on their own journey. I wish there would be a sequel to this story! I would highly recommend this book!
