This whole book feels like a bad fever dream and I don’t know how else to explain it

“She couldn’t tell whether the look of hurt on his face was real or manufactured. God, why couldn’t she ever tell?
Why did people lie? With their words, with their voices, with their bodies, with their beautiful houses and beautiful clothes and sometimes even their faces? Why couldn’t everyone just be what they were?
Monsters should look like monsters.”

“Deeper in or dead,” she whispered.
Winona wrapped her arms around Lucille’s shoulders, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “Deeper in or dead,” she agreed.”

so, i finished emily henry's backlist. hello girls was the last and it left me absolutely heart broken. i wasn't expecting that ending, i don't know what i expected, and it crushed me.
i had so much fun, but at times it was hard to keep reading, because it's so real and raw and painful. i'm still digesting it and probably will for a long time. winona and lucille will forever live in my heart
brittany and emily were born to write together. i'm hopefully waiting for the (un)official sequel.
that's it. i just finished it and loved it so much, but at the moment, i'm not having one cohesive thought.
let me just stare at nothing for a while

This book sounded so perfect. Thelma and Louise - teenage style.
Winona is an heiress to a large fortune from her maternal grandfather who is cookie king in Michigan. Her mom is gone - died of an overdose when she was little; or so they told her - and her dad is a controlling and cruel man who is also the weather man darling of the state. He hides his cruelty well and keeps up
Appearances about his perfect life with his perfect daughter in the public eye.
Lucille is from the wrong side of the tracks so to speak. Her brother is a drug dealer who steals from her. Her mother isn’t much of a parent at all.
The girls become unlikely friends one night and both are looking to escape their terrible situations. And one night… they steal Winona’s grandpa’s car and take off into the sunset. There are many adventures and mishaps along the way.
Their friendship was so endearing to me. I loved both girls. They were so different but their love for one another prevailed.
I loved the book all the until the end. The end was so disappointing to me. I guess it was realistic but also just so awful. I wanted better for them and if we couldn’t have better, then I wanted at least an epilogue about how their life turned out in the future.
A fun ride that was very quick. Would’ve been five stars if it wasn’t for that ending.
