I liked this but wasn’t prepared for it, that’s for damn sure.

Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off of the floor! I'm now finished with both books in this duet, and this is, hands down, the best mafia story I have ever read. The heroine, Morgan, is utter perfection - I wouldn't change a damn thing about her personality or the choices that she makes - and best of all, she's the perfect match for my new favorite unhinged mafia anti-hero with the itchiest trigger finger and best sense of humor I've ever encountered - Lorenzo. My full review will be on book 2 of the duet, [b:Grievous|33629853|Grievous (Scarlet Scars, #2)|J.M. Darhower|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1486333784l/33629853._SY75_.jpg|54472043], once I somehow figure out how to articulate just how much I loved this.

Two quick quotes from the book to give you an idea on the dynamic between the two characters, simply because I cannot help myself, and I have a feeling that my review on Grievous is going to be long AF:

~

"You just touched a nerve, you know."
"Don't make excuses, either. Calm your tits, and it'll be okay."
"Calm my tits."
"Yes." His eyes flicker to my chest, and I know he's imagining them. "As gorgeous as those tits are, calm them."
"Fine." I scowl. "You're still an asshole, you know."

~

"I got you," he says for the third time, "but I'm telling you, if you start fucking crying on me right now, if you start boo-hoo'ing, there's a chance I'll just throw you over the side myself, so don't do it."

"Until people stop being ignorant, I’m going to keep on getting pissed."

Lorenzo is my spirit animal. Girl, I like him and his humor.

❝Don’t make excuses, either. Calm your tits and it’ll be okay.❞
❝Calm my tits.❞
❝Yes.❞ His eyes flicker to my chest, and I know he’s imagining them. ❝As gorgeous as those tits are, calm them.❞
❝Fine.❞ I scowl. ❝You’re still an asshole, you know.❞
❝I know.❞ He breaks off a wedge from the orange, holding it out to me. ❝Want some?❞

i feel like this scene perfectly summarizes lorenzo and morgan's relationship.

I really should stop trusting goodreads reviews.

DNF at 50%.

I honestly tried hard to give it a go but it just isn’t for me.

I just find this book to be all over the place. I really didn’t know what was going on. There was such a disconnect that I really couldn’t get into the story.

The writing, while not terrible, was hard to get into. The dialogue was too much. Maybe it was because the author was trying to mags the characters more relatable but it just didn’t work.

The characters are bland and one-dimensional. There is no structure to the story and don’t even get be started on the plot.

There is little to no humour even though the author tries hard to portray fucked-up characters in more of a comedic light.

But most of all I was utterly bored reading this. Maybe it’s just me but it just didn’t spark an interest. I was mindlessly reading before I decided I really should give it up.
