April 2013: Had to return this to the library before I was finished, but I'll pick it up again sometime.
November 2013: This one didn't hold my interest like the first one did; my mind wandered a bit. I would have liked more about Zotz and the vampire bats, and maybe more of the bats respecting Shade, instead of being jealous he was a hero (i.e. Marina).

I'm so glad I finally get to continue this series. This book was absolutely thrilling, it was just one thing after another and it just kept me hooked right until the very end. I'm intrigued to know where the story is going to go in the 3rd book.

4 stars - a very strong sequel for a very strong series of wonderful fantasy novels.
Sunwing was the sequel that Silverwing needed, continuing Shade's journey to discover the truth behind Nocturna's Promise and the father he thought was dead. This book is quite a bit darker than its' predecessor, covering themes like animal testing and the wars that stem from religion. Kenneth Oppel's inclusion of a real-world military plot involving bats during WWII was an incredibly interesting plot point, and wow what an ending! A strong middle book for this arc that not only leaves me feeling like I had a satisfying ending to Shade's journey but left me wanting more to come. Excited to continue this series.

As an adult rereading this story, I really enjoyed the fast pace of the action. There was never a dull moment. I also appreciated the complexities, for its age, exploring religion and wrestling with the faith that you've had since a child. I was surprised at the description of animal sacrifice to the god of the underworld, as it could be scary for some children. Overall I enjoyed my time reading this story again.
