**2.5** This book was released in 2009, and it feels dated. I’m not sure if it was one of her first novels, but the dialogue was choppy, and the plot fragmented.

Sam is a police detective. Jory sees a murder by a well-know crime boss and refuses to go into protective custody. He flits around town, going dancing with friends, eating out, and going to work like everything is normal. Sam does his best to protect Jory, and he’s a jerk while he does his job. I didn’t like either character.

Jory is like this tiny beautiful toy that everyone wants to play with. All of his previous hook-ups want him again, even the women swoon over him cause he’s so cute.
“Your eyes look just like melting chocolate, that beautiful deep brown with those flecks of gold. I just hate you. And all that thick, blond hair you’ve got, my goodness, it’s a wonder you don’t have a stalker. You look more like a model than an assistant.”
I wish that Dane (Jory’s boss), who is my favorite character in this story, was the one that Jory ended up with. Actually, I liked Dane too much to pair him up with Jory. NVM.

It started out wattpadishly, and I found many things illogical, but I actually did enjoy it at some point (not the ending at all, I hate it).

That was an ending that will ruin me for a really long time. I absolutely adore Jory, and I love how he doesn’t lie to himself even when things are so shitty they require denial.

On to Book 2

"'Cause I couldn't find you,' he said, lightly kissing the side of my neck. 'And I woke up and needed you.'

This is one of Calmes' first works and it shows. Compared to more recent stuff of hers that I've read, the difference in writing is quite noticeable. In a certain way, the writing is much more 'rudimentary', for lack of a better word. It's not even worth explaining here, but I could notice some things I know experienced authors make an effort to polish out of their books. It was fun, however, to see how she 'evolved' through the years.

I absolutely loved everything about this. Jory is so sassy I wanted to slap him, sometimes, but most of the time he was just really sweet and I wanted to kiss and hug him instead. Seriously, I could relate to him so much. I feel like if we were sisters he would be the sassy, caring, good one and I would be the also sassy, but evil and bitchy one. Loved him.

I also loved his relationship with every other second character. Everything here felt real, even though the sheer quantity of secondaries got somewhat overwhelming here and there. I especially liked his relationship with his boss, Dane Harcourt. Dane is such a complex, fun character and his interactions with Jory were really unique. Actually, I wouldn't mind reading a whole book on Dane, to be honest. He is one of the secondary characters that's gotten the most under my skin, like, ever. I'm excited to see more of him.

And Sam? WTF. Every scene he was in resulted in me holding my breath and melting. What a fucking good alpha male character. Holy shit. I don't always like them, but in Sam's case, I can find no faults. He was hot and intense, but he also had his flaws and vulnerabilities. No black and white characters here.

Regarding the plot, it was fun, fast-paced, and exciting. There was the whole running from the bad guys thing going on in the background. But that was the thing: it was just the background! In no moment did the author forget that romance should be the main course and that just made me really content while reading. I just hate when my romances become something else.

Anyway, for a first installment, I'm happy with how their relationship developed so far, even though I really wanna strangle Sam for his stupidity at the end.

I have a new favourite M/M romance couple. Sam and Jory are just... aaaah.
They made me laugh, cry... and angry.
I just wanted to read this one book - and now I know I can't stop til I finished the series.

This is one of those conundrum books - do I love it or dislike it? Still not sure after reading!!
It certainly engages and I found myself whizzing through, maybe because of the short choppy conversations.
The story is told by Jory so everything is from his pov. He is a contradiction in that he presents as a dizzy, party boy but in actuality holds down a complex job. He is clever but does act TSTL (no safety after the murder, leaving hospital).
Sam comes over as an aggressive overbearing boor. He is going through a crisis in his being so some leeway given but then he really digs into his old ways, p-ing off Jory which is never pretty
Dane is also an enigma, another gruff boorish character, rude to most but seems to have a soft spot for Jory.
Does end mid story so definitely not one to be read without have book 2 lined up

This story had its moments when it was really good then Peter Perfect jumped in and ruined it. It seems that Jory has the Midas touch when it comes to people except for those that want to kill him. he should have got a job as a counselor. I will read the 2nd volume because I already own it but don't think I will bother any further.

I love Jory & Sam! I love this series...so much that I don't want it to end - ever! So I ration my reading, trying to make it last just a little while longer.
