I got only halfway through the book and it is not appropriate for ages under 14. I heard that the farther you go the more inappropriate it gets.

Listened to this as an audiobook, it’s a page turner and made the drive to quickly. A bit confusing and not the best for a YA rated book.

STOP. THE PLOT TWIST!
So, for the first half of the novel I was thinking: “Why am I reading a novel about a random rich chic wallowing around a private island?”
And some of that thinking did stick around to the end. Cadence, the protagonist, doesn’t stop lolling about and being miserable. In addition to this missing character development I found a lack of intrigue in the love interest. Gat was boring. Apart from these two things I didn’t have any issues with the text.
My best friend said the book was incredible, so being the faithful best friend I am, I persisted through Cadence’s sulking.
Then halfway through there was this sudden intrigue. I was completely immersed, particularly in the family dynamics. I didn’t put the book down until I reached the plot twist and understood why my best friend loved the story.
I would definitely recommend this book to pull yourself out of a reading slump!
Note: the writing in this novel
is randomly and
consistently disjointed
like
this.
If that’ll bother you, don’t read!

With a book this popular, I had very high expectations… and they were met.

The first three chapters had me hooked. Although, three chapters in this book was close to six or seven pages.

The description of the family painted a vivid picture of stereotypical large, rich families. Alas, the Sinclairs had their good moments as well as their snooty ones.

The writing style peeved me because
quite a few
sentences
were
written in this way,
and
it
went on
and on
and
on.

Because of this, the book also went by a bit faster. I read it within 24-hours and still recall many of the events that took place.

Around the middle of the book cursing became more frequent and it seemed as if every other page had an f-bomb. It wasn’t even an exclamation out of surprise or excitement, it was just written into the middle of a sentence.

I will say that the plot twist is the best I’ve ever seen. Occasionally, these things are expected but this one came out of left field and hit me in the face.

Overall, I give We Were Liars 4.5⭐️

10/10 would recommend as a mystery, drama, and quick read.

I bought this book a while ago and got about halfway through, before giving up on it. I picked it up again several months later, and was really confused as to why I'd ever stopped reading it. The writing is mysterious yet engaging and descriptive. I did find the overall mood of the book a bit depressing, but couldn't stop reading once I'd started again. and I'm so glad I did, because the ending was definitely worth it. despite having gone back to the book half way through and therefore not really knowing what was going on, the ending was so emotional and painful that I cried. now that I've read the whole thing, I really wish I'd appreciated and persevered with the book more to begin with. I'll probably reread it at some point to absorb the full meaning, as this was a really dark and original book that I'd definitely recommend.

This book is hyped up so much everywhere and I didn't like it at all. The writing style is so over the top (every time the main character meets even a minor setback she's like "then he turned into a bear and shot me in the face"), the characters have one trait each, and the way the author can't seem to decide whether these characters’ obscene wealth is embarrassing or aspirational and kind of tries to do both drove me nuts. (The dismissive comments in the afterward about Cady’s "marxism" do suggest a few things though...)

I thought this was a thriller from the blurb but nothing happens and the twist is beyond stupid. (Also I have no idea how the character got out of the situation revealed in the twist without any injuries that would be noticeable months later even if she did have amnesia.) I don't think this book had any redeeming qualities.
