Book 2

There is, again, a LOT going on in this book, but SPOILER with a few of the characters dying, it definitely helps calm the story line down. I still don’t think there was a need for as many POVs since they are so intertwined with each other. I do find it refreshing that even though it seems like EVERY character is in a love triangle, there is no obvious choice and then SPOILER someone will die and you rethink the love triangle in your head again, so it definitely has that romance angle going for it. But I am intrigued enough with the story line to continue on to book 3!

The ending was a little anti-climactic but YO THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD I AM OBSESSED I LOVED IT SO MUCH.

It was perfect. Like truly perfect. (Okay, it wasn't perfect, but you know.)

Do I think this had the most original plot, characters, etc. etc. Maybe not. But that doesn't really matter to me. This book kept me thoroughly entertained from start to end. There was not a single minute in the audiobook where I was bored or wishing something would happen. I was interested in all the action, all the dialogue, all the mystery, all of it.

Normally I don't like books that break the established POV pattern. For example, Falling Kingdoms only had four POVs: Jonas, Cleo, Magnus, and Lucia (oh, and the watcher, if I remember correctly). This one had mostly those four, with the occasional other one thrown in: Nic, Althea, Gaius, Lysandra. But for some reason I didn't mind it so much. I think because this book has so many characters (but not TOO many). I found I was kind of interested when Nic's POV was thrown in. (Def VERY intrigued by how his POV chapter ended...)

It was also so realistic in a lot of ways. I hate YA books that describe characters as "ruthless assassins" yet they never assassinate anyone ruthlessly? Or when these stupid sixteen year olds from the farm somehow outsmart people who have made their career out of military strategy?

People were dying left and right. I couldn't believe it!! King Gaius is cold and unfeeling? He actually acts cold and unfeeling. Jonas keeps coming up with all these plans—some work, some don't. He's not perfect, which I LOVE.

I genuinely was squealing, dropping my jaw in shock, getting animatedly excited while reading this book. It was SUCH a joy to read, especially after Falling Kingdoms was a bit of a disappointment. I'm shocked at how much I loved this, and I'm SO excited to start Gathering Darkness, and I hope it's as good as this one was! No second book slump here!!

So close to five stars. So close!

The only reason it didn't get the full five stars is that I have not fully bonded with any of the characters yet. If you have read this series though you might understand why I am reluctant.
Spoilerbecause they may die in the next chapter
. However Rebel Springs, and Falling Kingdoms, are so entertaining with so many twists and turns. I didn't know what was going to happen. Not really anyway.

Ahh I need the next book. I shouldn't have started this series now but I didn't know that I was going to love this series as much I do.

Something really interesting to me is DNFing good books. Maybe because it's not "what I wanted" at this moment.

Falling Kingdoms has a solid cast of characters, a community college effort to develop a good world, cool relationships, and a sense of moral ambiguity. It's fast-paced and legitimately fun to read.

I think where I struggle is seeing the influence from adult books like Game of Thrones, and always sort of wishing it just waa that. Falling Kingdoms is an attempt to bring multi-POV fantasy epic goodness to teenagers, and because of that, it stays safely in the teenage realm- and it does this beautifully.

But when ASOIAF is one of your favorite series, when you see the inspiration leaking out from that, at least for me, I found it a challenge to get lost in this world. Everything felt like a foggy, pale shadow of the fault works this book was inspired by. Which is a shame because Falling Kingdoms DOES take risks. Its not an undeserving series by any stretch.

I didn't feel like I could rate or even properly review this book because in the end, it's great, just not a great fit with where I am in my life. If you want a multi POV fantasy with decently complex characters and several books to the series, I think this is a fantastic choice.

ogni personaggio si innamorano del primo che passa, e del secondo e del terzo
tutti sono innamorati di tutti, i dialoghi sono assurdi e i comportamenti improbabili

3.5 Stars!

First book of the year!! Wahoo!
I’m happy I gave this series another shot. I really did enjoy it in audiobook a lot more than a physical copy which is super strange considering I usually don’t like audiobooks at all (maybe 2019 will be the year I listen to more).

I was interested in what would happen next, and it felt a bit better than the first book though had a lot less action involved. If I had read this physically I’d probably feel it would be difficult to keep reading (considering how political and plot based it is). I want to keep listening to these audiobooks and hope to finish them all within a few months 😊

Side note: I ship Cleo and Magnus as well as Laelia and Jonas.
Also Nick with that one person who kissed him but won’t say who because spoilers and maybe I shouldn’t ship it because it seems it may be from a negative reasoning but that kiss!! Ugh made me gasp.
Long story short; this series makes me feel a whole lot of emotions.
