Too much going on and it got lost in the shuffle of balancing life

This was a wonderfully surreal mystery novel, quite brilliant.

I so want to like mysteries. Isn't there a middle ground between dark, gritty mysteries (like I found this one) and cutesy "my cat is a detective" mysteries?

I'm reserving judgment until I read book 2, just because I want to make sure the author's voice is consistent.

A bit of a crazy detective, the best in the world, she says herself. The setting is New Orleans after the terrible hurricane a couple of years ago. How you can survive in this crazy city in crazy times. A weird book but I did enjoy it and will try to find more books by this author about this detective.

Couldn't handle the narrator's voice.

An excellent intro to a fascinating new female detective - one who is darkly interesting and as flawed as she needs to be.
I thoroughly enjoyed the setting of New Orleans after the inundation, and the locals are drawn compassionately, but I found the quoted phrases from the celebrated Silette to be mostly meaningless drivel.
However, I'm looking forward to the next outing with Ms DeWitt.

The character's voice is unique and compassionate. The weave in and out of timeline was beautifully done.

I really enjoyed this book. In addition to being a good mystery, it was an excellent study of New Orleans culture (the good and, especially, the bad) and socioeconomic issues. It was much more nuanced than I expected from the genre. If also made my very nostalgic for New Orleans. Not a fan of the narrator, though. The voice was certainly not nuanced, and a little too tongue-in-cheek, old school P.I. for the WHOLE thing...
