I struggled rating this book, and thought the whole time it was really around 3.5 stars but I was going to round down to 3, but ultimately went up to 4 because it had a really cute beginning and a really cute end, and I had to give it credit for that.

Alexa is in a hotel, on the way to meet her sister for a mini-celebration, when the power goes out and she's stuck in the elevator with the very handsome Drew. Drew is in town for his ex-girlfriend's wedding - who happens to be marrying one of his best friends. As the elevator remains still, the two strike up a conversation that ultimately ends in Drew asking Alexa to be his date for the wedding so he doesn't have to show up alone.

What follows is a long distance relationship of sorts were there is a bit of lack of communication and fear of commitment. It's probably very realistic of relationships these days, but for a book, I found it boring. There was no major conflict, really, just two people who couldn't admit/talk about how they feel.

That being said, of course I liked them both, and I wasn't expecting a deep life-changing read here, it's chick-lit! So, as far as chick-lit goes, I did like it. It featured a strong, smart, career driven woman who isn't a size 2 and didn't talk about hair, makeup and clothes all the time (as in, I could relate to her more than I can other chick-lit women), and the romance wasn't over-the-top or eye-roll inducing. And despite me whining about the lack of conflict, I still read it relatively quickly, so I must've enjoyed it!

Pretty much read this in one go. Very charming and sexy. Guillory perfectly captures the feeling of a long distance something. The characters are strong and successful but also experience points of hesitation that are v well developed. Also a fat black women as the love interest! I want this to be made into a movie yesterday. It made me think about the excitement but also the bravery that comes in a romantic relationship.

Maybe a 2.5? Because I'm trying to be more critical with my reviews this year. This book was a quick read but I didn't really feel the romance and nothing felt organic.

My favorite thing about this book was that the main character is African-american. And it only slightly surprises me that I don't think I've read a cute-fun-women's-romance in which the main character is African American??? If I have, I can't remember.

What constantly bothered me throughout the novel was that the main character, Alexa, constantly compared her appearance, her body + hair, to that of the other minor women characters who were white, blonde, tall and skinny. The problem I had wasn't that she compared herself to them, it was that no one, not even her love interest told her, HEY YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL, YOU ARE NOT LESSER THAN THEM.
