MacHalo Buddy Read Who chose this book? Elena? Elena? Was it you? I thank thee. It was an excellent book!

This was the type of vampire book my soul needed. To be honest, I'm getting a bit burnt out on PNR vamps n tramps. I wanted to get my hands bloody and gory. To watch vampires hide in the darkest places. Watch first hand at the mind games they play, and perhaps, maybe, watch them scare each other.

I really enjoyed [b:The Blacktongue Thief|55077697|The Blacktongue Thief (Blacktongue, #1)|Christopher Buehlman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1604069900l/55077697._SY75_.jpg|73882351] and wanted to read something else by Christopher Buehlman. All his other books are horror, alas, a genre I don't like, but I decided to give it a shot. This is my kind of horror-- essentially just a really good character study of vampires (also the plot is great, but I care much less about that). Worth reading for sure.

Christopher Buehlman is probably the author I have the most complex feelings about. Lesser Dead is another prime example of that so while I am thinking about his writing as a whole all of this pretains to The Lesser Dead.

I'm not a huge fan of how he writes or works sex in to the story. Not to mention sometimes throwing in sexual violence wether it be sudden or kind of a recurring thing in a setting. I know thats fully on me but the addition of the main character being on the younger side before they were turned and then having "charmed"sex with people felt like trying to creatively play with themes i hate and just really had me almost put it down.

Now the set up of his books for the 3rd act usally are so well done in a way to build anticipation which honestly is a high i ride til the end of the book. Things that seemed like small world building will come back in a satisfying way.

Now all that being said I'm going to keep reading Buehlmans books I look forward to the last few immensely.

Lesser Dead is a horror novel with a new spin on vampires. While I like the creativity and refreshing take on our pointy-toothed monsters, Buehlman's writing often frustrated me. He goes on tangents and long-winded explanations or descriptions about things I couldn't care less. I get that it's his writing style, and it works for some people, but I disliked it. It was very difficult for me to finish this, but, as a completionist, I forced myself to read it. Definitely not for me.
