This book is written by researchers and therapists with knowledge and practical experience, and it shows. It's balanced and responsible, cites throughout to research literature on panic disorder and its treatment, and is realistic about the difficulty and discomfort of some of the exercises it recommends.

The book focuses on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based exercises designed to help panic sufferers reduce their fear of panic-based symptoms and situations, based in the theory that panic attacks are exacerbated by fear of, and excessive self-monitoring for, panic-related physical symptoms. It is forthright in its conclusion that CBT has a better long-term success rate than medication alone for treatment, but it is also honest in its recognition that medication, or medication in combination with CBT, are also effective.

I don't suffer from serious panic problems myself, but I feel like this book could be useful to those who do, both as a self-help regimen and a way of determining whether professional intervention is needed.
