This book was so good! I literally enjoyed every moment of it! Once again the Dursely's were the worst people to Harry! I couldn't believe they put bars on Harry's window. Once again Harry saves the day by going into the chamber of secrets I couldn't believe it was Jenny who had gotten Tom Riddle's diary but once I found out who had given it to her it made me dislike the Malfoys even
more! Professor Lockhart deserved everything he got because he was a coward & a liar! My heart broke for Hagrid and I feel he never truly got justice & I cried tears of joy for Harry setting Dobby free! Overall this book brought back all the feels and then some from my teen days and I can't wait to read what happens next!

As I go down memory lane - I just get real upset thinking about how trash the movies are in comparison to the books. If they were written today / made into screen versions - an hbo series and a season for each book would be the ultimate!!! I’ll just have to live with my imagination on the parts they completely failed to include in the movies

The first Harry Potter introduced a lot of things to us. It introduced us to the magical wizarding world and how different it was from the muggle world. It was a journey of discovery for Harry and ourselves as strangers into this parallel culture. Largely this introduction was positive. Sure we were given people who were hard to like in Filch, Snape, Draco and the like but they were almost what could be expected of any school. We all had teachers we didn't like and classmates we didn't get along with. Now of course we are also made aware of the villainous Voldemort and the book ends with Harry having to confront him, but overall we're not introduced to the complexity of Rowling's world until this second book of the series.

Here we are introduced to some of the seedy undersides of the wizarding world. The pride of pureblood wizards, the looking down on of wizards who have muggle parents (and muggles in general), the subjugation of other species (house elves), wizards who are frauds and also wizards who are actively trying to bring back Lord Voldemort. The world doesn't stay simple for us and we realize that the wizarding world is full of its own brand of social ills.

I think that this helps Rowling's world appear even more convincing and draws us in. This world of Harry Potter has great wonder and amazement with the magic and spectacle, but it also has a dark side with more than just one evil villain looking to take over the world. It is a world layered with various types of ills.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was a book I enjoyed quite a bit. It presented us with some of these shadowy aspects of the magical world, which continues into future books, and presents us with a grand adventure and mystery to solve.

Now the book does have its negatives. Dobby is rather annoying in the book. He causes so much trouble for Harry that you really wonder how much he's trying to help. I also dislike the whole sending Hagrid to Azkaban as a precaution, although I guess this does fit with the willful miscarriage of justice that happens in the next few books. Although truth be told these are just minor issues in a book that I still thoroughly enjoy.
