I was going to give this book three stars until I got to the second half, where the story finally captured me. Until that point, I enjoyed reading the book, but the characters hadn't resonated with me. I was reading about their lives from afar but with little emotional tie. I got caught up in Dinah's story, though, and cried, laughed, grieved and rejoiced with her. The names of the Egyptian gods brought back vague memories of a high school mythology class. I enjoyed this work of historial fiction.

One of my all-time favorites. Showcases the strength and capacity of women, and also the love and ubiquitousness of the feminine divine. I love this book.

In my opinion her best book yet! What a beautiful story of how women celebrate being women. Her writing style is so graceful and for telling a story so far back in time, I really felt transported and it was very believable for me :-)

One of my clients told me that she buys this book for all the women in her life, she thinks it's that important. I suspect I am too young to appreciate that level of importance in this book that follows the story of Dinah in an out-of-bible experience. She goes through all the stages of womanhood, love and loss and wisdom. It's an amazing lesson on aging as a woman, and on finding a variety of types of love in your lifetime.

Great book! Flowed very well, and was hard to put down! The author clearly put a ton of research into it, which made the story that much more believable. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I think every woman should read this! This has become one of my favorite books for so many reasons. It explores topics such as what it means to be a woman, a wife, a sister, a daughter, an aunt, etc. This story is what it would look like to give a voice to the women within a male-dominated society where their stories may never be told nor understood otherwise. It emphasizes the roles that women play in being “the keeper of stories and memories” and how the midwives who serve them at their most vulnerable are the ones to heal and uphold these sacred traditions.
As a mother, doula, and midwife myself, it is deeply moving. I feel like this is one of those books that causes you to takeaway something different with each re-read. Is it biblically accurate? No, but that’s the point of Historical Fiction.
Can’t wait to give it to my daughters when they’re older!
