This is the third book in the Odd Thomas series. Odd has taken himself off to a monastery in the Sierra Nevada's, and big bad thing comes to play. the Baddie in this book is a new creation, not a Bodach or a bad person in general. I still got through the book very quickly, but it had parts that were slower than in the first two books. There were times when I had no problem putting the book down at all. Don't get me wrong, it was still really good, there were just times that I felt I would be more inclined to clean or do something besides read. Whereas with the first two books I just wanted to read and find out what the heck was happening. But in the end I say another hit by Koontz.

In the last review I wrote (for another series), I mentioned that I tend to be a completist and therefore keep on trying books in a series even when I am less than impressed with the first books. In that series I was sorry that I had continued since the third was no better and thus I dumped the series all together. But I'm happy to report that I have had the opposite experience with the Odd Thomas series and am very happy that I didn't give up after the first two books.

I had always liked the idea of Odd Thomas as a character but felt Koontz had under-developed both the character and the potential plots in the first two books. There just wasn't enough interest there to drive me toward picking up another. And yet I did. And this one charmed me.

I felt more connected to Odd this time around, much more interested in what his life is all about, and I really enjoyed the supporting cast this time, particularly the characters of Rodion Romanovich and Brother "Knuckles" Salvatore. It is really Odd's relationship with all of the characters here that drives this book, his introspection on life that shows a wisdom beyond his years. The mystery plot is not as good as it could be...it's hard to create a whodunit atmosphere when the protagonist has "psychic magnetism" that automatically propels him where he needs to be in order to make things right. And the horror aspects are also pretty mild since the entire novel is really Odd's reflections on his experiences and thus tends to branch off into more personal introspection just as the action starts to get more intense. But odd's relationship with those surrounding him is what makes this one work. I felt good at the end, well satisfied, and will definitely be pursuing this series further.
