Veronica Speedwell is a hoot. Lepidopterist by trade, investigator by hobby, she and her colleague Stoker work together in their trades and investigations. Set in Victorian England, they both seem a bit modern for the time, even for the modern in their time, but their independence and uniqueness are refreshing. Asked by an important woman to look into a local artist's murder, Veronica and Stoker are introduced to a bohemian lifestyle and set of characters that don't fit the norms of the day. As they work on the case, more is revealed about their personalities and lives as well. Several laugh out loud moments, and I just love the way they bicker with each other, but take care of each other when it's important too. Just a super fun series.

A Perilous Undertaking
4 Stars

When the mysterious Lady Sundridge request's Veronica Speedwell assistance in proving the innocence of Miles Ramsforth, an art patron convicted of killing his mistress, Veronica and her partner in sleuthing, Stoker, reluctantly agree. Soon the two find themselves immersed in the art world where people are willing to literally stab each other in the back.

Veronica Speedwell is a breath of fresh air. Her straightforward, no-nonsense approach to life is invigorating, and her dynamic with the brusque and gruff Stoker is simply wonderful. Their snarky bickering is delightful and their attempts at concealing their obvious attraction under the facade of friendship is fooling absolutely no-one.

Once again, the mystery is fairly obvious although they are some intriguings twists along the way and the climax and resolution are intense and exciting.

Looking forward to Veronica and Stoker's next adventure.
