Nine Moons is a pregnancy memoir, one that isn’t saccharine sweet but rather honest and unflinching, warts and all, full of mixed emotions, contradictory thoughts, good and bad experiences. It’s written by a Peruvian journalist, resident in Spain at the time of her pregnancy. Some of it is obviously country specific but much will be familiar to pregnant people and prospective parents everywhere. There’s humour, but also pathos, and a real mix of topics is explored, some expected and others less so - sonograms, the difficulties of choosing a baby name, complicated mother-daughter relationships, list during pregnancy, and pornography featuring pregnant women. Not one I’d recommend to every pregnant person, but perfect for those looking for a less conventional and stereotypical approach to impending parenthood.

This is a beautifully written and translated memoir of a pregnancy and birth, by the Peruvian-born and Spanish-resident journalist, Gabriela Wiener.
When she becomes unexpectedly pregnant, despite it being poor timing, she and her partner decide to keep the baby, and she begins writing about her pre-partum feelings and experiences, the rollercoaster of emotions and the multitude of logistical challenges new parents have to deal with.
This is a guts-and-all account of impending motherhood, including all of the doubts and fears, all the gross bodily changes, and the sometimes horrendous experiences at the hands of health care professionals, as well of course as the excitement and joy of bringing a child into the world.
I am not a mother nor planning to become one as I've just never experienced maternal urges, but this was a fascinating and engrossing book taking a very woman-centric, honest look at pregnancy, and thanks to the writing and translation it was an absolutely pleasure to read.

This book discusses pregnancy and motherhood in a kind of raw and honest way that is extremely rare to hear in todays society. Definitely worth the read for any woman, even one like me who doesn’t plan on having children.
