I LOVED this book. It was such a sweet story, and the plot didn't follow the usual "spend a whole book looking for my dad when family has been here the whole time" course. I was especially impressed with the subtle social commentary--I appreciate any book that brings up race and feminism while still focusing on the plot.

This would likely be four stars if I hadn't read too many books lately in which parents keep secrets and extremely important things from their children. This book is about the child working through that, and the parents own their mistakes, but it was not a part of the book I particularly enjoyed. Otherwise, this was a fun look into the world of wrestling and the Southwest, with deeper thoughts about family and found families.

“Sometimes hate & fear are just two sides of the same coin.”

Awww I loved this heartwarming story full of friendship, family secrets, culture, discovering who you are, & your family history plus throw in a little Greek mythology, science & wrestling & I’m here for it! I loved this cast of lovable quirky characters plus you can’t help but fall in love with Adela! She is smart, resourceful & she loves big & isn’t afraid to taking risks. I enjoyed learning more about the lucha libre (Mexican wrestling) culture. It’ll make you laugh, cry & leave you with a smile on your face! Heads up for a few mild swears.

Twelve-year-old Adela "Addie" Ramirez has a big decision to make when her stepfather proposes adoption. Although Addie loves her stepfather she wants to know more about her biological father & her mother refuses to talk about him. So Adela sets out to discover who he is and get her questions answered… what she doesn’t expect to find is a whole other family. But being part of a family is so much harder--it's about showing up, taking off your mask, and working through challenges together. Adela learns that you can love your family but you can’t change them & love is always worth the risk.

“Anyone who saw us taking our photos would think we were a family, and we were. Long-lost family, stepfamily, blood family, chosen family. Part myth, part science. We were all those things.”

Great story about a girl finding out about her fathers family. The ending was fantastic. Really illustrates that families are complicated and answers are not black and white. Find the good around you!
