One of my favs this year. Each time I pick it up or talk about it, I find a new reason I loved it. The MC was immediately likable and you are rooting for her to find her father. The characters you meet along the way and how they help her on her journey is wonderful and then the ending is just

Lovely story with a sympathetic protagonist and a through exploration of the complex emotional nuances of family relationships. The wrestling adds a lot of fun content, as well. A little long for this age group perhaps, but well worth the read.

Addie doesn't remember her biological father. When her stepfather and mother ask her if she'd like her stepfather to formally adopt her, Addie decides she needs to know who her biological father is before she can decide.

This author is a favorite among staff at my library ([b: The First Rule of Punk|33245571|The First Rule of Punk|Celia C. Pérez|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1497633222l/33245571._SY75_.jpg|52689581]), and I loved the rep of Lucha Libre wrestling, diners, archive research, school plays with a twist, student activism, and getting to know family. Oh, and there's a recurring character who does a drag queen storytime!

Great, good. Will probably take out to middle schools, and recommend for our local upper elementary Battle of the Books.

PopSugar 2016 reading challenge #37

Wrestling culture. Wrestling family. Blaxican identity. Young girl trying to figure out who her father is -- since her mother has done a good job of keeping them separated for 11 years (which honestly, once you meet the father, I understand: he's a jerk who will never prioritize his daughter and I'm sorry, she deserves better). Such a wonderful young adult story from a very unique perspective. I guess I'm mostly upset that the father, Manny, is to immature to be a good father. Even given the chance, he cannot be bothered to enter his child's life. And I feel for the little girl who wants to get to know him but cannot. Luckily, she has decent families on that side of the family. They're great. But Manny.... boo.

Definitely worth the read!

Another wonderful example of realistic fiction for middle grade!

From the representation of so many different voices (shoutout to the drag queen uncle) to the absolutely delightful concept to the idea of found family, this book is a true winner. It is easy to fall in love with Adela's voice as she navigates learning about her biological dad and how she grapples with her new-found family. I probably could better compile thoughts if I wasn't supposed to be doing my actual job right now, but let's just say I enjoyed it.

This is a really sweet story. I picked it because my kids are currently going through a WWE obsession.

They were intrigued enough to listen (while playing their games) and it started an interesting discussion into wrestling, celebrities and the choices they need to make to be famous.

This book is about so much more than wrestling, it's perfect for any child who wonders why they don't come first with a parent and for any child who is trying to work out where they fit in a family.
