This is a short book and I found the stories very fluid but I had a hard time connecting with Bitna

Gelezen in originele versie - Een prachtige, ontroerende roman van een zeer groot schrijver. De jonge Bitna woont in Seoul en gaat als "job" verhalen vertellen aan de doodzieke Salomé... Zo eenvoudig is het. De verhalen die zij vertelt zijn bijna sprookjes en hoe meer je de roman leest, hoe meer je de onderlinge samenhang ontdekt, en ook wat er "echt" is en "niet echt"... Het leven is niet altijd zo mooi, maar soms hard en meedogenloos: dat willen de verhalen van Bitna aan Salomé vertellen. Op pagina 201, bijna op het einde van de roman lezen we: "Ceci est une histoire vraie, ma seule histoire vraie. Je ne veux pas dire que les autres histoires que j'ai contées à Salomé, pour guérir de sa douleur, étaient fausses, mais je les ai arrangées pour qu'elles lui plaisent, j'ai ajouté des petits mots doux, des petits mots durs, pour qu'elle comprenne que ça se passe dans le monde qu'elle ne connaît pas, le monde où l'on bouge, où l'on sent la chaleur du soleil, le froid du vent d'hiver, la pluie, la neige. Le monde qui est cruel et égoïste, parce qu'il ne s'occupe pas d'elle. Le monde auquel elle ne manquera pas quand elle mourra".

I read half the book and it was not doing it for me. I was going to force myself to finish it but then I realised I don't have to.
My first try at Le Clézio and sadly I'm disappointed. The writing is quite dull, the story a bit uninspired... I did enjoy some poetic parts like the description of flight of the pigeons but all in all I leave this rather underwhelmed.
2 to 3 stars for what I read.

J'ai été surpris de voir à quel point ce petit roman est respectueux et bien attentionné. Parfois, il faut le point de vue d'un étranger pour dévoiler les secrets quotidiens, pour mettre à nu les trésors cachés-à-la-vue-de-tous d'un lieu, dont les habitants ne se soucient pas normalement.

Ce roman est une version contemporaine des Mille et une nuits.
La Shéhérazade de J.M.G. Le Clézio est l'étudiante coréenne Bitna, engagée pour lire des histoires à Salomé, une femme malade qui n'arrive plus à bouger de son fauteuil.
Tout au long du roman, la réalité se mêle à la fiction et la vérité au mensonge, de sorte qu'il est parfois difficile de distinguer les deux plans.
Très bonne interprétation de la narratrice Sarah Stern.

When I started this book, I couldn’t help but be a bit skeptical: what could an old French man have to say about a young woman from South Korea?
In the end, I feel like appart from a few references of places or food, there wasn’t that much about Korea itself, nor its society. It wasn’t bad tho, and while reading I still felt like I was in somewhere in Seoul, with Bitna and her stories. The references just seemed a bit superficial at times, but it’s probably because I had too high expectations.
I usually love when there are different stories within one book, and when they get intertwined, and on that aspect I was satisfied. I didn’t like all of the stories Bitna told Salomé, but they were still intriguing enough that I kept on reading.
Overall, I didn’t not love this book as much as I wish I would, but it was still a pleasant read, nicely written and quite poetic, and I’ll definitely try to read more from this author

Cela faisait bien longtemps que je n'avais plus rencontré la plume de JMG Le Clézio. Dans ce roman, l'auteur aborde les thèmes du corps qui se délite à cause de la maladie et du pouvoir que peuvent offrir l'imaginaire et les contes pour échapper à l'enfermement. Comme souvent, c'est poétique. La narratrice a également une manière assez naïve de présenter les choses, avec beaucoup de métaphores qui prêtent parfois à sourire. Une jolie lecture.
