Amazing! I bought this book in order to learn a litle bit more about east Germany and GDR, and I learned indeed! The author spent some years in Germany not very long after the fall of the wall and she tried to interview some people that their life was affected by the regime in GDR. Ex stazi agents and officers, politicians and normal people are describing their own stories on how GDR and stazi changed their life forever!

The author is doing very good work on putting different stories together and also adding her own perspective on how she saw the remainings of east Germany and a wall which was dividing it.

I really liked the book and totally recomend it to you!

a really interesting and astonishing piece of non-fiction which accompanied my trip to berlin that delves into what life was like for east germans in the GDR and under the stasi. i learnt so much from these personal accounts that i had absolutely no knowledge about before. many of us have extensive knowledge of the german empire, the nazi regime, and ww2, mainly through school, but german history after this time period is equally important and transformative.

what was really staggering for me whilst reading this was learning about the complete lack of justice and accountability that occurred after the wall fell for people persecuted by the dictatorship and stasi. germany has been a nation that has endured so much political and societal change in a century which is both extremely disturbing and wholly fascinating at the same time.

Engaging and moving, but lacking a interrogation and analysis of the Stasi.  At least there was less self-insertion.

I read this for school, and was not expecting much (as a 17 year old who prefers to read fantasy novels) especially when most of my peers had relegated this to the worse choice out of the two for our comparitives. And exactly because of this i found myself surprised and enjoyed my read. While not all the chapters were my favourite, the ones that were had a immense impact. The descriptions, style and POV were immersive and helped to add to realism. While the narrative of the day to day life helped as a breather from the heavier content as well as provide a sense of calmness. Overall a charming, intriguing and informative book! Look forward to re-reading it again in class.
