On and off engaging. Might try another in this series since so many like them.

This was one that's been on my list for a long time. Loved the characters and will definitely continue the series.

I love the cozy style and pace of these books. These remind me a bit of Elizabeth George and of Agatha Christie's Marple books. The setting is so true to small town life.

I love finding a new mystery author. Louise Penny has found a Chief Inspector in Gamache who knows how to pick and groom a team in Quebec province. In this story, a small town finds a well loved woman dead evidently from an arrow. The folks in the town have a decided background in art and find that a new work shows more than at least one of them would like to display.

This story is not grabbing me. Might be the narrator - he has a very bland voice. The characters aren't 'coming alive' for me at all - and I don't care who killed Jane at this point. Maybe it's because it's the first in a series? Not sure. I realized I had left it playing for about 30 minutes while not actively listening, but I dont' feel like I missed anything. For 30 minutes!

Glad to have--for once--started a series at the beginning.
Quirky and (yup) cozy. And kind of weird. Giving it four stars for the absolute strangeness of the setting, the characters, the plot. And because I'd be willing to read another one, to see if Penny's writing continues to be full of tiny surprises, if we get to learn more about Gamache and how he came by his amazing powers of observation--and if Penny grows as a mystery writer. I'm guessing...yes.

The strength of this book for me was the characters. The town is populated by an interesting group of people who are fully-developed, with hurts and disappointments, loves and dreams. In a lot of ways, they are examples of people we meet everyday, people who may very well have secrets behind their own doors.

Louise Penny has become my new favorite mystery author with this series.
