Wow. War is an unspeakable ugly thing. Runin Fang is the epitome of feminine rage. Her ruthlessness and grit to keep pushing and keep going really speak to it. I am in awe of Runin and Venka that rose from the grave they were thrown into.

This book has made me cringe in disgust at the acts of pure cruelty that is done.  It really demonstrates the atrocities humans at war are capable of committing, very real crimes that people today are currently committing and have committed.

I’m curious to see if Rin does raise an army of shamans.

Holy shit. What an ending. I feel like l've been sucker punched. I think I'll be staring at the wall for a few hours after that.

rin, I am always going to support because at the end of the day, everyone else kinda deserves it. am loving the venka and rin friendship I am receiving, especially after all that happened in book one.

now....

MY CIKE. THEY'RE ALL GONE. ALL OF THEM. in reality, this is just one of those situations where I would read a fanfiction of the characters (dead) reacting to the story because, despite his flaws, I miss altan. and I will miss the other cike members too now that I've finished book 2.

An amazing sequel to the poppy war. There were so many moving parts and I was flabbergasted at every point. Rebecca you ate that!
Now, Yin Nezha when I catch you Ricky???????? What a serpent. Oh my heart broke for Rin. She was literally stabbed in the back. Kitay you beautiful boy…love you!! My girl Venka really came around, my heart still hurts for what she went through.

This book is very dark and violent and I enjoyed every bit of it.
Shout out to one of my favorite narrators who brought this to life, Emily Woo Zeller!

I'm amazed at how quickly I've been devouring this trilogy. Military-focused stories are not my usual book fare, but this trilogy has been really doing it for me. Kuang manages to weave a tale that is both fast-paced, yet still digestible. I love the way she blends history and military strategy with fantasy elements and shamanistic magic. It's surprisingly engrossing. And I think that Rin as a main character is excellent; she pisses me off so much, but I want to see her win so badly

I was so done with Rin in this book. She became this whiny little b***h seeking validation and was overly obsessed with Altan. They weren’t even that close and the AH slapped her that one time, like tell me why all of sudden she’s determined to honor his memory? Also, aren’t we supposed to be developing her character? Why does she feel underdeveloped? This is the SECOND BOOK!!!! I was expecting her to be way more badass. Make it make sense!
