I shouldn't be rating this now because I know very well that I would have given at least four stars if I had finished this book the first time I picked it up as a high schooler.
The story and the setting are really good, but I just couldn't bother listening to the 18 year old protagonist's monologues about metaphors every two chapters. Even worse than that was the awkward censoring of curse words that had every character, including a middle aged man, yell "sparks" whenever something didn't go according to plan.
Every time the story slowed down a bit I lost interest because the writing couldn't keep up. The dialogues got annoying, the characters were cliched and had no personalities other than "drinking coke" or "making up facts about Scotland", and my mind kept wandering to all the other books I could be reading instead..

Overall just a really fun book. The plot was fast-paced and the world was interesting with the many different "Epics" and their powers. The main boy character is your typical "nerd" (though he tries to deny this) and is awkward with girls kind of character, and while sometimes I find to read from that kind of view annoying, I didn't have that problem with David. I think his terrible metaphors/similes were what really tied his character together to make him loveable.

woaaaaaah all the plot twists at the end!

This book was like watching an awesome superhero/villain movie! Action packed from beginning to end!
It was a great starter and introduction to the series, I can only imagine all the stuff that's going to go down from here on out. Can't wait for the next book!

Also, I loved that the characters were +18. It made the story more believable!

So I'm a pretty big Brandon Sanderson fan which is honestly the only reason I probably read this book in the first place. I grew tired of YA several books back when all of the plots seemed to be exactly the same in an ever so slightly different setting. This one broke that mold quite nicely and I'm pretty sure I devoured it in two days.

The characters were all uniquely motivated and not necessarily all toward the same task. The reveals were all excellent, as Sanderson does, and the pacing was quick, particularly for one of his books. I liked the idea that the bad guys were the ones with powers. It isn't necessarily a super creative twist (think every Dark Wizard who takes over the land only to be bested by a dude in a loincloth with a sword) but it was well executed and created a fascinating setting. The way the characters discover to battle the Epics is also fascinating and creates a depth even to the bad guys in the story. It was a wonderful read and I will definitely be finishing the series.
