honestly i kind of liked the silly/rude/uninformed william ping
and i really wish it didn’t get all “it was just a dream”-ed and “of course its fictionalized but the bones are true” and “also it’s covid time right now”.
i would have loved to have the opportunity to see more growth from him.
maybe its just because of what i’ve read in the past but i’ve seen a lot of “here’s what life was like for initial chinese immigrants and how hard it was”, and im vastly more interested now in what does that mean for generations today? how do you actually navigate these feelings and pasts especially (in this case) for mixed race people?

This book made me miss my own grandfather so much. I wished this book existed when my grandfather was still alive. I don't know why I never had the courage to ask him about what growing up during the war was like and what working as a laundress on ships wad like. He had told me snippets of travelling to South America and even showed off some of the Spanish he had picked up. But I really wish I had sat down with him and had a full conversation about his life.

Started pretty strong (the second-hand cringe and embarrassment was entirely on another level), then it got really good but then proceeded to get a bit dry and slow before picking up again at the end. It broke my heart a couple of times.
