this would’ve easily been a 5 star read if it was at least 250 pages shorter. don’t get wrong, the plot was interesting and zenodarla were swoon-worthy and served boy-and-girl-obsessed x100 BUT! it felt too drawn out and i was underwhelmed that i figured out the plot twist when i was barely on page 200 and then in disbelief when i realized that i still had 350+ pages left. when i got 60% in, i had to push myself to continue the story because i’d already read 350+ pages and i’m too stupid stubborn to dnf. also, if i had to guess, approximately 100+ pages of this was just zeno and darla going at it like rabid dogs and it got so tiring very quickly.
overall, even with this being a hot retelling of hades and persephone, it makes me sad how underwhelming this was because i really tried to love this. but it just wasn’t for me.

Here’s the thing, I’m not big on mafia romance specially straight ones. It did have some good smut scenes though I give it that, however it was way too long it really needed more editing and there was a bdsm scene with hazy consent which in my opinion should have been handled better but To sum it up I did enjoy it.

the way zeno goes out of his way to be against trafficking and pedophilia and sexual violence like yes i am so glad you are meeting bar (the bar when it is in hell) but also why are we acting like you being a weapons manufacturer is not active complicity like how do we think this violence is being perpetuated and enacted in the first place?? who the fuck is running trafficking rings in this fictitious universe that is not using de la croix weapons?? if he was really about the girlies he would be about the girlies but no he wants all his billions. plus armel or whatshisface being a pedophile and a human trafficker was never a part of the conversation until éva was assaulted like you invited the human trafficker to your house to your baby sister’s sweet sixteen and you are surprised by what he has clearly proven himself to be capable of?? let’s be fucking for real. and on the note of being fucking for real, zeno never gave a fuck about any other woman’s gendered subjugation beside the women closest to him, in fact, the act of blackmailing diane and forcing darla into marriage is the definition of subjecting the women closest to him to gendered subjugation so that whole uwu i will avenge you in silence because im the punisher mentality is giving exception it is not giving rule. so he can act all high and mighty as he likes but violette and i both know that him calling her “a hole” is how he really feels about women.
speaking of the sheer stupidity that is this mafia kingpin 🙄 what the fuck did zeno mean when he said “Once the negative connotation has been taken away, you’ll find yourself getting wet when I degrade and praise you.” like what the fuck does he think degradation is?? if you took away the connotations of every derogatory thing he said it wouldn’t be derogatory it would be just another fascist killer yapping his dumb mouth as he fails again and again to protect the woman he claims to love. so zeno gianni de la croix can drop dead.
i have many more things to say about this book and none of them are nice but i will stop at a third: the incest was so unnecessary it gave no plot advancement nor any character development it just acted as an extra inch of taboo for the fucking funsies?? a brother avenging his discarded and dead sister is plenty but no for some reason marzy opal sat themselves down and said damn wouldn’t it be so fucking awesome if these blood related people were also going at it. 😑🤚
