Started out super strong. The drama for the two characters and some really great dialogue. And I loved how they made each other laugh. And then half way through the drama was just kind of super easily solved and then just like we’re like yep love you. And it felt too easy and a little boring. No moment really felt like the climax. They were both just so nice to each other which we love but meant nothing happened. And I was hoping they would stand up to their parents and kind of have the character growth but instead it was more just like they left as their solution.
Ps the butlers were hilarious lol

A long weekend of bad weather and four of these later and I'm kinda disappointed there aren't more.
I liked the men in this series MUCH more than the Bridgerton clan in the main series.
And the women - much more adventurous.
Also, the romantic scenes in this one are hot.
2023 re-read: Today was a rough day. Cold, wet, child at home, not 100% well, meant to be summer. This was exactly what I needed today.

Charming and witty, but all the plot and conflict was at the beginning.

I received an ALC from Harper Audio in exchange for an honest review.
First Comes Scandal is the fourth book in the Rokesbys series and it can definitely be read as a standalone. To be completely honest, if I had read this book as opposed to listening to the audio, I probably would have given it 3.5 stars. But Rosalyn Landor does such a fantastic job bringing this book to life that it feels unfair to give it anything less than 4 stars. I listened to this audiobook in one day – that’s how much I loved Landor’s narration.
The ratings for this book are mixed and after I finished listening to it, I can understand why that is the case. First Comes Scandal is light and fluffy, with zero angst. There is no big plot and the romance itself is a slow burn that takes its sweet time to develop. The book is pretty much character-driven with lots of fluff and witty banter, which is Julia Quinn’s strength. The timeline is also tight – I think the entire story takes place within the space of less than 2 months? There isn’t a big dramatic conflict, but the climax itself is medical in nature and sends a very important message. My advice: don’t go into this book expecting a major storyline with a big dramatic conflict. Only read this book if you're in the mood for a fluffy romance with low angst.
I don't mind reading fluffy and low-angst books with no plot, as long as the main characters are lovable. If there is no plot, then the characters are the only thing left motivating me to either continue reading or to drop the book altogether. Georgie and Nicholas were utterly charming as individual characters and as a couple. They were such lovable characters. I also adored the supporting characters. The little Bridgertons’ appearances made this enjoyable romance even more fun to read. I ADORED seeing baby Colin and little Anthony and Benedict Bridgerton. Their scenes were absolutely sweet and hilarious. I also love that First Comes Scandal was a friends to lovers romance, a trope that Julia Quinn, in my opinion, does extremely well.
First Comes Scandal is pretty low key and I was in the perfect mood for a low angst romance, so it worked really well for me. It made me laugh so much and greatly improved my mood. I recommend it to anyone who's looking to lose themselves in a fluffy and light romance.

2.5 stars rounded down. I picked this up as a cheap ebook because I wanted some more Julia Quinn after watching Bridgerton, but while I did like the characters and enjoyed the first third of the story, things seemed to just trail off once the two MCs decided to get married. As others have noted, there was little to no real plot and what minor conflicts existed were easily resolved without any real effort by or consequences for the characters. I also felt Quinn made the mistake of assuming that, because she intended for the characters to get together in the end, she didn't need to put the work in to actually *show* us their relationship developing on the page, which is basically the cardinal sin of romance novelists in my opinion. First, the characters were childhood friends who viewed one another almost as siblings; then suddenly, poof, they just "saw one another in a different light" even though nothing notable had actually caused the change. Enjoyable as a fluffy diversion, but ultimately disappointing and lacking in depth.

A bit of a long exposition set up, too much cat and family, however it was pretty surprising in its sweetness overall. I particularly liked the male character and his open kindness. This was in many ways a very ordinary comic romance but with extremely likable characters. Quinn is a very good author in terms of overall warmth.
