This is the last part of season 8 of Buffy. And it turns out all season 8 did was make sure that in the end the world is reset a bit. The first part of this trade, I really did not like, but the last part where they are showing of the new world for season 9 was a bit better. (hence the three stars)

Still I think the beginning and the end of season 8 seem out of sync. I feel like there are still some things that are not entirely clear.

I'm still in debate if I'm going to read season 9. I think I'll first check some reviews.

Holy depressing plot twist, Batman. I did NOT see that coming.

I found this instalment a bit confusing because I didn't watch the Angel TV series so there were things happening that made NO sense considering the ending of the Buffy TV show. But a quick wiki-check later and I was (sort of) up to speed.

I'm interested to see how the events of this season in general are reconciled to allow Fray to happen in the future. It better not turn out to be some alternate universe bait-and-switch.

Buffy saves the world and everyone (with the exception of Spike) hates on her? I'd say at least some of the gist of the TV series was successfully preserved. This first season got a bit carried away with the possibilities of the new medium and kinda forgot to pay more attention to what Buffy is all about. Hint: it's not (only) the monsters.

This volume was definitely sad, and I don't know what else to say plot-wise without spoiling it. But there was beauty and hope amid the sadness, which is what I love about the Buffyverse narratives. The art work in this volume was exquisite and presented well even on my new Kindle, which yes I finally did cave in and get to better control the book clutter in my house! After reading this volume, I look forward to eventually reading the Buffy/Faith comics, and hopefully to meeting Eliza Dushku at Dragoncon this year.

And the re-read of season 8, now with reviews, is complete. And this was a bit too much. I guess I liked the complexity of the larger set of characters, though I wasn't all that happy with how they were used. Or really not used as the book went on. But readable throughout.

I kind of thought that book 7 was the last book of the series - otherwise I would have waited until this book came out to even read season 8. And now I'm confused. Season 8 aimed high but in the end crashed of its own complications. This, the ending book, was too complicated for me to enjoy.

After the hot mess of Season Eight, Joss comes in to wrap things up and tease us with Season Nine. I'm not sure it was the wisest decision for him to apologize in the afterward, but at least it was honest. Season Eight was all over the place, with no coherent plotline other than the vague threat of Twilight, never truly realized until the tone deaf and ridiculous Retreat story arc set him and the Slayers to all-out war. And Joss is right in his apology, this is not what Buffy is about. Buffy is about teenage angst made real in the form of monsters. It's one of the misunderstandings of theme and downfalls of the later seasons of the TV show as well. But Joss is a talented guy (not to mention the rollicking assist he had from Brad Meltzer in the previous arc), and he manages to tie up the "big budget" shenanigans in a way that creates an almost ideal setting for Season Nine. And it was entertaining, too. Except for
Spoiler Giles' death. Was that really necessary?
So I'm looking forward to reading Season Nine. After it's completed. In about five years.

oh sweet baby jesus. joss whedon, are you going to leave any parts of my heart behind?

uhm, the world in this book is very crazy and some really wild shit happens. i can't even... i just can't... was this whole book a dream sequence?

Angel + Buffy's baby totally beats the shit out of Edward + Bella's baby.
