This book was every bit as good as I remember it being when I was a teenager, and possibly even more challenging. The premise is so dark and sad, but the characters so loveable it's hard not to enjoy the story.

I love watching the character growth in Peeta and Katniss. I will always cry at that one death. Haymitch is probably my favorite character.

The underlying warnings about a people divided are hard to ignore.

My only real complaint with the book is how stiff Katniss is throughout, even when she knows what's on the line. Maybe it's just because I don't relate to her personality but I found myself rolling my eyes at how obtuse she is at times. However, this definitely doesn't ruin the story for me at all.

i never got around to reading these books as a kid and i’m so glad i decided to pick them up now. i’ve seen the films so i kind of new what to expect, but katniss’s internal monologue adds SO much to the storytelling. excited to continue with the series

Everything is crafted masterfully, from the characters and the atmosphere down to the political system and it’s flaws. I really enjoyed Katniss’ small ways of rebellion. I don’t think there’s anything about the objective value of this book that I can add that hasn’t already (rightfully!) been said, so I’ll stick to my subjective enjoyment of this first hunger games book.

I watched the movies before reading the books and I can’t say it didn’t influence my reading experience. I definitely would have enjoyed it much more if I hadn’t known the story, but it was still very entertaining and I got through this first book in a couple evenings. Despite me knowing the major plot points, the story still had me hooked and it was interesting to see Katniss’ thoughts.

It’s a really solid book, one that has undeniably influenced many aspects of our 21st century media. Personally, I thought this was great, but I’m not obsessed with it like I might have been if teenage me had read this going in completely blind.
