The chapters on anatomy, hormonology and tracking/living with your cycle were the most valuable to me as they also offered concreet tools to get started with.

The author, who is herself an alternative health practicioner, discusses western as well as non-western approaches and treatment options, but clearly favours the latter. While I do not mind a more holistic approach, it was very clear the author was  judgemental about hormonal birthcontrol, other western treatments and medication and different types of diet (such as vegetarian and vegan). This is not very helpful for people who menstruate and for whom e.g. hormonal birthcontrol is the best option for their particular situation.

I would reccomend skipping the ‘selfcare’ chapter and listering to the podcast Maintenance Phase instead. There is a lot of diet talk and the language used seems kind of fatphobic to me.

This book changed my life. And even that is an understatement. I read this book cover to cover and still refer to it like it’s a dictionary or encyclopedia. I’ve used this to book to have conversations with my doctor, advocate for myself, and rebalance my hormones. If you’re looking to learn more about your body as a woman, read this. You won’t regret a single page.

This should be how our sex education lessons are taught in school. If this had been handed out instead of an out of date video being played in front of the whole class whilst my teacher embarrassedly made his excuses and disappeared for the duration of the “educational” video then I’d have been a lot better informed about how my body worked when I was 13 as opposed to 20 years on aged 33.

This book was 80% misinformation, scaremongering and anti-modern medicine nonsense and 20% helpful in raising awareness about how women and their menstrual issues should be taken seriously. Speaking as someone who has two suspected endocrine/menstrual disorders, I can say I have tried all of the natural methods to help me and it did nearly nothing. I am telling you now, herbs and acupuncture are not going to do much to to help me, I have tried many herbs and supplements, weight loss, diet changes and the only things that have really helped me is ibuprofen, heat patches and Pilates and walking for cramps and a prescription from my doctor and that has worked for me! If you find the herbs and holistic approach helps you; great! But doctors and research should not be discredited by someone who is not a medical professional.
