FMC (Tessa): 3.5 (she should have made him crawl but I liked her strong sense of self and her positive portrayal as a “flirt”)
MMC (Brett): 3 (Howard has a type lmao - at least he was going to marry her and save her from prison even before he realized she was innocent. Wanted him to grovel more vs just telling her how it was. He needed to suffer 😏)
💕: 3.25 (I mean they had chemistry and understood each other but it was tempestuous to say the least lol)
Plot: 3 (so much potential - I love a betrayal plot, but it’s all wrapped up way too quickly and neatly. The fact that they didn’t send the actual culprit to prison is a crime…literally! If it was a man I feel it would have been different)
🌶️: 3
Writing: 3

Considering when it was written, this was one of the better romance books that I've read. The writing was a lot better than usual, and I quite enjoyed the story it's self.

I usually love Linda Howard, but this book was unreadable. The female lead wasn't interesting ("oh, she's the prettiest girl ever!"), the male lead seemed like a total bully, and the interaction between them made me want to submit a sexual harassment claim on her behalf. Quit in the middle.

FMC is a Mary Sue. MMC is too he-man. Too much insta-lust. Dated.

i like most all of linda howard's books. i picked this one up because i needed an audio book and it was the only title of her's that i hadn't already read. but as i listened it was apparent that it was a very early work by her. it was so dated, i finally looked at the copyright date and found it was from 1985!! her writing has improved immensely since then. I will continue to read her books, but i'll be checking the dates first!

Was totally right. I'm beginning to have problems with contemporary books . Cause a lot of the "contemporary" are not to me. hero mucho man has to be right and solve everything.

My eyes were rolling and I was laughing and cringing with the thoughts and behaviors of these characters and the inappropriate (and dated), ideas and descriptions, but I ended up being highly entertained by the trope of man wrongs women and then must grovel. There isn’t much of a grovel, but somehow I was convinced that these two were made for each other.

The hero is basically a possessive psycho who tells her she's his and to cut out all other men in her life after their first date. He also blames her for his irrational behavior because she's just so sexy that he can't help himself. It's a classic abusive relationship without the physical abuse.
