read for class.

after reading Carpenter's introduction, i felt like i had to question his perspective and the way he spoke about Merasty a lot - it also made me wonder what might have been left out and why. our class discussion also talked a bit about this, but i was thinking about it while i read the novel.

Incredible book. So devastating for how small the book is and I couldn’t put it down. What an amazing human who went through hell. Highly recommend!

I don't feel comfortable giving this book stars, but I loved this book. What a beautifully brutal and evocative memoir. I love how much that stubborn drive to find some sort of happiness and to survive shines through all the vignettes. The audiobook really felt like sitting down with someone and listening to their story, rambling and tangents and all. Highly recommend for all Canadians.

A short book but tough to get through. Absolutely appalling what these people went through. Augie is so brave for recounting his story and trying to work through his trauma in such a matter a fact way that almost took all the emotion out of it. Unfortunate that he couldn’t have gotten help sooner to be a better husband and father but I’m glad he was able to reconcile with his family after the book was published and his family found him the help he needed.

There are no words for how deeply upsetting and impactful this book is. On a surface level, it's a short book about Canada's history, but deep down there's something more to it. The story of a survivor, and the impacts of cultural clash. There's no way to rate this, no way to actually give a definitive "this book is good or bad" here. This is something that transcends the typical star system and makes people think about what exactly it means to be Canadian, what it means to be a person who has benefited from everything throughout Canada's history on the backs of its Indigenous people.

This is not a book, but a message. And, especially after the beginning of the unearthing of the mass graves, this is a message everyone needs to hear.
