Pro: thank you so much for adding scenes with Jian in them throughout and not going all New Moon on us and dumping the male MC in favor for Jeremiah or something. Truly. Thank you. I can’t wait to see Ruo again. I really missed her.

Okay, I’m a sucker for romance. I know this. Book one gave this to me every page. Easily 6/5 stars. Book two has tons of romance and tension, don’t get me wrong. But it also had sooo much world building that I just wasn’t prepared for and isn’t my cup of tea and didn’t seem necessary (yet). I was on the last page and realized this was a trilogy and not a duology so we shall see! I am very excited to see the conclusion. I wish the lengthy world building conversations between Bua’la’mi and Brianna would have been spread out more. I kept putting the book down halfway through but it was worth continuing easily!!

“I felt myself liquefy beneath his heat, and he changed me drip by drip, shaped me so I would never be the same. Too late, I fumbled to solidify the walls that protected my heart. Too late, I remembered the warnings carved into my life from all who had hurt me. But the damage was already done”

“The world had gone mad, so we would go mad along with it.”

Continuing where left off last time at basically the end of the original fairytale, I wondered whether Ivinya would pick up a second one or continue the story threads she'd set up in the first one in an original way.
And I'm happy to say that this time around the Retelling part of it all was a closed book, so I had no idea where the story would be heading anymore.
After being a bit iffy about the pacing of the romance last time, I was an absolute ball of giddy for the entirety of it this time around!
A great continuation of the first book with some really interesting magic ideas and story beats, and a great setup for a probably huge finale. Looking forward to it! :D

There are things that bothered me in the first book that just got worse in the second. Taking Chinese characteristics and names was bad enough, but then taking the written language as well? It makes absolutely no sense. They don’t _speak_ a different language, so why would they have a different written language—and it’s even mentioned that it’s not the characters of the alphabet. It’s sloppy world building to simply import a nationality.

Brianna is so incredibly angsty—the arguments she has with Jian are childish. She certainly doesn’t act like she’s 18, and he doesn’t act like he’s 24 and a general.

My interest in the spirit creatures waned, and wasn’t enough to keep reading.

I don't remember it — I know I should — but anyone who knows me knows how horribly terrible my memory is, but that's okay, no one is perfect. I do have flashes of this book, some sort of shred, but they wouldn't be enough to give  a well-written review.

The first book was better. This one was very slow in the beginning and then a lot happened all at once. I did enjoy it and look forward to the conclusion.

As the second book in this series, I found I was struggling with Brianna's character after having rather enjoyed her in the first book.

It felt more like a slow build up with alot of information for the majority of the book to then finally get some good character action and development. Near the end it started to pick up good traction only to come to an end of the book to be picked up once more in the third.

I enjoyed Feathers of Snow a bit better than this one. I think the reason for this is because this one does have more of the Fantasy aspect than the first book. We go to the border wall with Brianna broken and rejected for her to find out who is calling her. She has a run in with some bad spirit beasts and is saved by a white bird. She begins to bond with this bird and learn more about the spirit beasts. Jian is there as well which I was very happy about, for some reason I didn't think he would be as present in this one. There were some things I didn't like at the ending concerning Elyanna.
SpoilerMostly I feel like there was a huge build up about what exactly is her part in all of this with the evil bird. There were questions left unanswered with her that I feel should have been cleared up before her death. Especially since it was talked about multiple times during the book about what she was planning.
I really do love the authors writing style. She keeps great pace and makes it a very easy and enjoyable read. I look forward to the next book!
