In many ways this was a tough read. It is an excellent portrayal of this woman’s grief at losing her mother. She is also trying to find herself and build her own life at the same time. Very well written.

It took me a long time to get into this story—too many books set in restaurants, both fact and fiction—while finding my own writing voice at the same time. I knew the writing was golden though and knew I had to hang in there. Halfway in, things clicked. I even collected some writing exercises to engage more memories.

I adored this book from the start. There is so much that I can relate to with Casey, but she still feels like a whole, distinct person that I did not try to see myself in. This book could get pigeon holed into romance, but it’s much more about figuring out what defines you—and some of that is in how you relate to people and who the people are that make you feel like your best self. I will definitely add this to the shelf of books that I read over and over again.

Before I get into this, I do not know why I feel so passionately about this and if you get offended easily maybe don’t read this review as I will probably not be the kindest.
I am so so so disappointed by this book as I was told this is something every person in their 20s should read. I did not need to- honestly I would’ve been happier not spending $10 and spending three days getting through this novel. Nonetheless, I will start with the three things I did like about this story.
1. I thought the descriptions and emotions of grief were written well. Grief looks different every day, every moment, and the author captures this unbelievably. Also, she did great on showing how it can affect every aspect of life such as relationships, mental health, and work.
2. Casey’s relationship between her parents. I thought the author did a good job on describing the difficulties of having divorced parents and feelings of being pulled in both directions as a kid.
3. The writing festival portion.
Now that I gave a few kind remarks, lets dive into the relationships. First the title is a dead giveaway on what is to be expected, she dates a lot of writers.
We first get a glimpse into Luke. What was the point of this?? To show another failed relationship?? We were supposed to feel the depth and the utter heartbreak??? No. There was no depth, but there were a lot of cringy jokes thats for sure.
Theres a glimpse into Paco and spending time in Barcelona. Ok???? Again what was the point other than it being a failed relationship? The thing is, if that was the point then okay, great. Although I don’t think it was as the author constantly tried to make us feel more heartbroken for these two relationships but there was nothing to feel devastated by.
I had high hopes for Oscar as he was the most well written love interest in this book, though the most interesting part about him was his children. One of the first things we learn about him, other than the fact he’s an author, is his devastation towards his wife’s death. This is revisited as Casey and Oscar begin their relationship while being cautious about the kid’s emotions as well. Soon, Oscar is in love with Casey and gives relationships another chance despite everyone around him believing she will break his heart. BUT THEN THE BREAK UP. Oscar was ready to have Casey MOVE IN but when she breaks up with him his response is, “Probably the youngest lips I’ll ever kiss again.” LIKE WTFFFFFF?!?!?!?! Personally, this feels like lazy writing. To have spent so many chapters creating all these emotions between two characters, showcasing a widowed husband discovering love again, and literally incorporating the dynamic of the kids who lost a mother and were ready to let Casey become someone that resembles a mother to them????? To throw this away by the final response to Oscars being, “I’ve forgotten what gets revealed right after you break up with someone.” Yes, that is a true statement but at least go along with what you’ve been building up in your story. At least make the guy upset about his CHILDREN and I don’t know.. something about every one of his fears coming true?????????????? Sometimes I have an issue of believing I know the characters more than the author but this is straight up ridiculous. I could continue extensively about this single relationship.
Silas. All I got from him was she was able to open up to him and she was very lustful for him. That’s all I got.
Apparently the novel is all about making the readers FEEL something but we literally never felt the depth of these characters nor their relationships to one another??? Yeah i did feel something, passionate anger. Aspects of possible cancer, eviction, and sexism were just thrown in seemingly to spice things up. These are important topics that could’ve been expanded upon in meaningful ways. Overall, at least two exciting parts happen in this book (1) The main character getting hit by a car while chasing after a dog (2) The writing festival.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love plotless and mundane books- they’re my favorite but oof I have no more words for this.
I do not understand how there is a plethora of 5 stars. Kudos to you if you enjoyed it and I’m glad there are books out there made for you. This was literally another Book Lovers except more mature and less hallmarky. So maybe try this if you like Emily Henry and want more eloquent writing.
(I’m not usually this awful in reviews and genuinely I am so glad people did enjoy this book, that’s the beauty of how literature impacts people differently!!)

I loved this book so, so much. It is a beautiful story - funny and sad and you just root for the protagonist the entire time.
