I think that this really deserves more than three stars but I also think my expectations were too high. This was conversational and informative, but... it just didn't light me up. Also, I fancy that I have a strong stomach but there was so much grossness in this that I kept saying EWWWWW out loud. So beware.

A succinct, yet comprehensive account of how Victorian surgeon Dr Lister developed and fought for, the universal adoption of antiseptic technique in surgery. Written in a conversational style, with plenty of context given, this is the story not only of a great leap forward in medicine, but also the personality, values and spirit of the man Joseph Lister. His fight against the conservative establishment, and perseverence in the face of taunts like maverick, eccentric, or even "deranged", is a truly inspiring story for anyone interested in the history of medicine, or any lateral thinker challenging the status quo.
