Who Gets to Be Smart, by Bri Lee

I found a lot of this really interesting and well researched, and overall I enjoyed it a lot. I find the way Bri inserts herself and her feelings into everything a bit distracting and annoying in a Helen Garner-esque way, but this is clearly her style. The focus and structure of the book disintegrated as it went on - early sections were really strong and eye-opening, but the last few felt disconnected and directionless. It tried to interrogate a lot of really important topics and succeeded in some areas but ultimately fell short.

I am glad I listened to the audiobook read by Lee herself, the narrative voice in this book is extremely compelling.
I understand the critiques on the structure of this book and whilst I do agree with some that there are a number of tangential arguments, overall I feel better informed by this book.
I am incensed by our systems - as we should be - and desperate to both know more and do more to support the reversal of these trends.

3.5 stars.
5 stars for Lee's narrative voice - I love how she writes.
5 stars for the opening.
3 stars for the overall book, which sometimes felt like it veered off course, and lost me as a result.

I’ll probably revisit it eventually and it explores some interesting topics but I don’t see myself picking it back up any time soon.

(It has been on my currently reading shelf for 8 months lol.) I read the first half fairly quickly and then just lost interest in the genre over time. It happens
