I almost DNF’d because of the slow start, but the beautiful writing kept me locked in. Once we got to the halfway point though, I was locked, and so happy that I stuck with the story. Truly beautiful

Popsugar 2023 #6-Advanced: A book with a pet character (Sindbad the dog)

I messed up reading this. I had three paper books that I wanted to read so I could return them to the library, and I was reading this a chapter or two at a time so that I wouldn't lose my Kindle streak, and reading it chunked up like that made it really hard to keep track of January's arc versus the book-within-the-book. When I finished the third library book, I had to kind of re-orient myself to this novel. I read the second half more or less in a straight shot.

I still loved it. The writing was beautiful. The worlds the author built were beautiful. I felt like I transported through each door myself.

I'm already looking forward to reading this again properly.

2.5 but Goodreads is lame and does not do half stars. It is closer to a 2 so I am making my own damn system and giving it a 2.33.

My first Alix E. Harrow book was The Once and Future Witches which I LOVED. My expectations for this one was therefore high even though this is, in fact, her debut novel.

The Ten Thousand Doors of January did not disappoint. I thought some things were weak in this compared to The Once and Future Witches such as the villain and the plot events being rather obvious but overall it hit most of my good spots. It had loveable and complex characters, a rich world (worlds really). I adored the magic system as well bearing the idea that with the magic of words anything is possible.

It's a story of the love of stories and of love itself. Great book.
