As usual my first point is that I don't like short stories so much, but as Eugenides is one of my favorite author I was going to read them anyway. Some are really very good, bittersweet, and some totally bitter, but in each of them there is something that make you remember that as if it was a book in itself and not some pages in a collection, I guess this is the reason why he is such a good author.

This is hard to rate because the collection was hit or miss for me. But I did really enjoy Complainers, Air Mail, and Capricious Gardens.

none of the stories stuck with me after finishing it - except for one which was very disturbing.

I have been a fan of Eugenides work for several years now. I found Middlesex to be breathtaking. While this collection of short stories wavers from being compelling to just okay, the titular story was just too much. In the era of #metoo a white man writing from the perspective of a teenage girl of Indian heritage who essentially frames an older man for rape is gross.

I prefer his novels, but the short stories are great.

“Baster” is disturbingly good, as is the titled story, “Fresh Complaints”. Eugenides is a competent and intelligent writer.

Eugenides is still one of my absolute favorite writers. His characters are so real, and so authentically sad and disappointing and let down by life--just like we all are--that it's almost painful to read. But the writing is so beautiful at the same time, I can vividly picture almost everything he writes about. There were some stories that I liked better than others, and I was disappointed that multiple stories relied on men having affairs with young (underage) women as the point of conflict. But overall, a highly enjoyable collection. I just wish we didn't have to wait as long between his books.
