I resonated a lot with the cultural aspect of familial ties and relationships and definitely found myself crying. It’s a bittersweet ending with a lot of growth for many if not all of the characters.

I loveeeed this book. It’s one I wish I had read when I was younger. Sánchez tackles the topic of losing a loved one as a teenager beautifully, and I loved the themes of mental health, generational trauma, connecting to one’s culture and empathizing with the struggles of those who have come before. The main character is so lovable and easy to root for. I can’t wait to watch the film adaptation!

My therapist gave me this book to read because I would find it relatable, and I did, as a Hispanic kid who couldn’t be the perfect Puerto Rican their family wanted them to be. I cried towards the end of this book and felt hopeful.
The author wrote Julia and her family so authentically, it felt like I was her and the Reyes family was my family. I can definitely see this being a classic in the future that the next generation will read in schools and find growth and love in.

I think this is a wonderful book that should be required reading in high schools across the world.
It’s raw, it’s beautifully written, and above all it is real. Nothing is glossed over and it makes for a very emotional and compelling read.
Highly Recommend but please do your research on potential content warnings before deciding to read it!!
