Yes, the characters and a most of the story was predictable and some parts were even sappy, but the flashbacks were wonderful and I couldn't help but love listening to this story.

Wow. I just loved this book. I couldn't get enough of Mei Lien's strength as a granddaughter, daughter, wife and mother. As an immigrant, I found her struggles heart wrenching. I loved that she didn't give up and her love for her son and heritage made me weep. Great read!

I really enjoyed this story, although it has some decidedly heavy and dark parts. It was enlightening to learn a little about the mass Chinese deportation/murder in the PNW and the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, a piece of history I knew nothing about. I enjoyed the dual timeliness format and while I cared more about Mei Lein's story, I enjoyed the interweaving with Inara's modern story and the slow discovery it created. Ultimately the ending is a bit predictable but that didn't diminish it for me. A very good, fast read.

I loved this book. The author perfectly wove the historical and current day stories. I really like historical fiction so it was a wonderful look at Chinese history in America that I did not know about.

I really did like the idea of this book but when they started to connect the boyfriend to the son it all got too weird for me.
I did do a lot of side reading about the history of the Asian exclusion act in the Seattle area. Did enjoy learning more history I didn’t know about before.
