5 stars! Even that the main characters were a-holes, the story was very gripping. I was thinking the whole time âhow is this gonna end after all this?â

Like most other people, I first read "Wuthering Heights" when I was a teenager and thought it was the best thing ever. Now, reading it 15 years later as an adult, I can honestly say I do not enjoy the book at all; in fact, all the things I liked about it were now giant red flags. I'm actually quite amazed I made it through the book, but I wasn't going to let it beat me.

Better than Jane Eyre
I like Emily Bronte's story much better than her sister's, even if everyone in Wuthering Heights is an awful person

I read enough reviews about Wuthering Heights to know this isnât a love story, so I went in not really knowing what to expect. Here I found obsession, unlikeable characters, a rainy and miserable (fictional) corner of Yorkshire, and Nelly Dean.
I donât care that the characters were unlikeable, but I just didnât care about any of them. Heathcliff was an interesting character study, and out of his interactions with Catherine we got some of the best lines in the book (and in Victorian literature, judging by how much theyâre quoted).

Wow how dark that was. Totally wasnât expecting that. If you are interested in this book, highly recommend listening on audible. Joanne Froggat from Downton Abbey narrates, and it is lovely in its darkness.

Definitely not a love story, but perhaps an interesting revenge story. Every character in this book is deeply flawed and most are toxic. Heathcliff is over the top dramatic and very annoying.
Thereâs very little moral or theme to this story beyond revenge. Anyone who says that it is a great love story between Heathcliff and Catherine must be deluded or only know toxic relationships. If anything Edgar loves Catherine better and is more devoted as to give up his desires for hers.
The books seems to drag on and on, especially since the reader has already been told what is going to happen in the second half from the first few chapters of Lockwood visiting Heathcliff.

Graphic: Toxic relationship and Panic attacks/disorders
Moderate: Sexual assault and Xenophobia

Despite finding the two main characters (and several of the secondaries) abhorrent, I was totally compelled by this book. It's one epic train wreck chronicled over three generations, and I couldn't take my eyes off of it.
Emily Brontë's writing is surprisingly clear and readable, despite all the jumps she makes in narrators and the disjointed stretches of dialogue. I had no trouble keeping track of all the Earnshaws, Lintons, and Catherines. The novel is rich with layers I didn't bother to analyze intellectually as I was reading, because they are so effective in context. I'm sure I'll have fun deconstructing things in my head once I'm over the shock of it ending - of all that misery coming to a halt.
Whew. What an experience.
