Fables Volume 1 collects the first story arc of Fables by Bill Willingham, series that tells the story of fairytale characters living in exile in New York City. In this volume Bigby Wolf investigates the murder of Rose Red. It’s a fun mystery and a great introduction to the world of Fables. This was a re-read for me, and I really love this series. Great art and writing, and a cool concept. It’s gritty, funny, and fantastical. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was an excellent introduction into a unique world filled with interesting takes on old, familiar characters. It'll be interesting to see where this goes!

Can’t help but compare this to the telltale video game adaptation (I know, sorry) but I’m sad to say I enjoyed that more. The premise of this is super interesting but I was slightly disappointed in the characters (particularly the female ones) as they were slightly one note and not as layered. However, it is still a very interesting narrative and the storylines are engaging so a solid 3 stars.

Okay, so I'm funneling back for my honest first thoughts.

I started this series off with noting book one had truly atrocious artwork that I almost could not stand at all. The kind that was starting to test where my patience with Sandman in my late teens had come from. Though I was mildly intrigued by the world premise I didn't feel like it was played with enough. And somewhere between the art and this, I was holding on by hope and the fact both great friends and favorite authors had said this series was the bees knees.

Oh, man, I love this more than words can describe. I managed to tear my way through all the published volumes AND the spin-off series in a week, foregoing sleep when necessary. And then I went and bought my favorite volumes. A bit obsessive, yes?

Volume one is my favorite. I love the noir feel and the introduction to the characters. It's even better to go back and see everyone in volume one and think about how much they've changed and grown in later volumes (though some to refuse to evolve. I'm looking at you JACK).

I rather enjoyed this take on classic fairy tale storytelling. I tried to read this comic before, but couldn't get through it. It wasn't until I finished The Wolf Among Us by Telltale Games that I decided to give this a go again. I quite like it! I can't wait to read the next volume. I really like how the fairy tales are all kind of woven together through a tragedy that brings them into a common world. Many people complain about the art style, but I don't really mind it. Here's hoping volume two is even better.

3.5, rounded up because I'm feeling generous.

The art is great, but honestly, I'd rather just play the game again. (And also, I know Snow was kinda bitchy in the game, but holy shit, she's so rude in the comics.)
