This was a unique concept for a historical fiction novel! I really liked that it wasn't war-focused, but instead was centered on women's ability to practice medicine in England in the 19th century. Nora was a very intelligent and bright main character, and I enjoyed how she stood for what she believed in. Also the romance felt realistic, and not rushed or faked. However, the authors did not shy away from very graphic medical descriptions. It was clear that it was very well researched, I was just not prepared for all the details. While I enjoyed the book, I probably won't carry onto the next book in the series.

A compelling and well-researched story of a young woman growing up in a surgeon's household in the 1840s. She learns all about medicine and surgery from him and then finds herself unable to practice it due to English law.

There is a lot of historical fiction with the scientific woman before her time theme. The number of books with this theme is somewhat overwhelming, but this version is definitely worth reading.

"The Girl in His Shadow" is a dramatic, intense historical fiction story about a woman who secretly helps at a surgery. I really liked Nora as a character, and I'm curious to see what happens next in book two. There were several surprises throughout the story, so even though it's a long book, it didn't drag.

A solid read—not life-changing or memorable, though. I was worried the romance elements would overwhelm the story, but they did not. I appreciated the ending a lot.
