was assigned this book for class and didn't expect to enjoy it nearly as much as I did. al-hakim is a great satirist and the bleak humor in this book is very reminiscent of something like catch-22. the bitter comedy is executed and deployed very, very well.

If there’s something that speaks to the nature of Egypt (and Egyptians) is their sense of humor. It’s unique. It’s absurd. It’s creative. And “Maze of Justice” by Tawfiq Al Hakim is hilarious. A murder occurs in a small village in Egypt. The local prosecutor has to juggle with an absurd system, corruption and uncooperative and uneducated population. My favorite character was Sheikh Asfur, who only speaks through verses of songs. .

If you love Naguib Mahfouz, like me, you’ll love Tawfiq Al-Hakim.
