Not that I had super high hopes for this Bridgerton story but I did not enjoy. I was bored up until the last 40 pages and even those felt almost rushed to me? Colin was a horrible character in this book when I thought (prob bc of the show, sue me) he was all sweet and charismatic. Lol. He made me want to root against them tbh. The other characters weren’t spectacular, but they were fine. I did really like Lady Danbury’s + Penelope’s friendship for some reason? Not a fan

I struggled finishing this and I don't really understand why. Conflict-wise it's rather good. I like how it focuses on Colin and Penelope's writing skills and how they go from there. Although, I must say that the first half of the book was rather boring for me, and I'm not sure why. I guess I'm pretty biased because of the show (but I kinda like how I finish the show first so I can at least see what's different). I never really like Colin and Penelope, and I'm pretty sure the whole fandom will rage reading this. :"))

Anyway, back to the story, the development of the reveal was also pretty good. I also like how Colin wanted to find a purpose for himself at first, being a third son must be hard. I like how after he found out about Penelope, it made him jealous and even more insecure about himself. And I certainly like how they managed to work on it in the end, with her editing his writings to be published. Writing is what bonds them together, and I like how it builds their marriage as well. Oh, I also like that Penelope decided to retire from being Lady Whistledown after getting married.

I cannot really feel how they are friends, but I can definitely sense respect towards one another as a writer. However, I must say that I hate that they always ended up having sex after having an argument. It always bothers me because the transition is just too sudden for my liking.

Anyway, I suppose this was wrapped up nicely, and I didn't regret finishing it. I do understand why fans were angry about the third season of the show, but I have to say that both the show and the book have their own good parts. It is nice to get all the needed perspective.

This was by far the best of the first four Bridgerton books, and the only one that I would describe as "good" as opposed to "good enough." It does suffer from some of the same problems as the previous three, mostly in the form of insufferable male characters, but beyond that pretty much every aspect is improved.

First, the plot. This is, of course, a romance. And in that sense the plot is pretty predictable. But while the previous three books made the romance the distinct A-plot, this one has two A-plots. And the one that isn't a romance is a lot of fun and ties into the rest of the series really nicely.

Second, the characters. Of the eight leading characters in the first four Bridgerton novels, Penelope is my runaway favorite. It's not close. But beyond Penelope, I love the way that Eloise and Hyacinth are developed. They're both very, very fun characters. And while there were hints of that in the first three books they didn't get a spotlight until this one. I also really enjoyed the slightly increased role of Lady Danbury, who has always been a fun character, in this book.
