I re-read this book after 3 long years and still found it as amusing as the first time. My favorite character of the book is the manically depressed robot, Marvin. (who's depressing personality reminds me of the ever so pessimistic squintern, Dr. Fisher, played by Joel Moore, in the TV show Bones)
The book starts with a gloomy prediction, that the planet earth is going to be destroyed and there is nothing we can do about it. Earlier, Arthur Dent's house is being demolished to build a bypass for city needs. Ironic is the fact that the reason why earth is being demolished is the need for a galactic bypass.
This book is full of hilariously ironic gems. Amusing is the fact that the rats are the actual species who commissioned the planet earth to run an experiment, while the human beings think of the mice as just their lab rats.

This is obviously a minority opinion. I am not a fan of British comedy to begin with (sorry Monty Python), so this book was set up to fail in my eyes. I listened to the Stephen Fry audio book, which may have been part of the issue. All the absurdity was even more absurd when spoken out loud, and it just did not make sense for the first 80% of the book. Eventually, the whole point of the book made sense and there were a few funny parts in the last 20% of the book. There are so many cultural references that have come from this book (digital watches, Deep Thought, 42, babel fish, towels) that it behooves everyone to read it once.

This was a little disappointing. No, the book is very good but I’ve watched the movie before, multiple times. I thought the book will bring me deeper into the story of Arthur, but it doesn’t! The movie is very similar to the book. So much that I don’t think you need to read the book if you saw and enjoyed the movie. The things they changed in the movie are so little. Nevertheless it’s just book one of a pentalogy, I guess to explore the universe you’ve to read the others as an addition to the movie and not this one.

If you are a passionated Fan, get your towel and enjoy the Book! If not, buy the movie.
