I have had two strangers come up to me in various coffee shops telling me to not finish this book or subject myself to anymore of it. Odd. I should have listened to them. At first I liked this book. Perhaps because I know the shop no alibi well and am from belfast but soon the novelty wore off and the book lost my interest. Funny in places but I won't read anything else from the author.

I liked a lot of this book. The main character is a neurotic, hypochondriac, and a racist. The last trait was generally well managed. I was drawn quickly into the world of No Alibis. I read the book quite quickly – which is a sign that I got into it. The story starts with two small episodes, one of which is used later. I also liked the idea of the reluctant private eye being drawn into the world by circumstance. When the going starts getting tough our Mystery Man tries to get out. It is his partner, and girlfriend Alison, who keeps him on the case. To do carry-on, of course, and the do solve the mystery.

I was briefly enjoying this until the narrator's love interest decided that her pride was more important than accepting that disabled slurs are not acceptable in polite society, and the narration expects me to be perfectly okay with this. I'm not.

Adored the first half; it was funny and dark and fast moving; if only it had continued on with individual, amusing cases, instead of getting bogged down in a long and boring one, with an unlikely and often confusing love story.
