Thoughts after reading this directly after Dragonflight and Dragon quest:
What I like: More female-centric. Good intro for younger readers. Cool that it dovetails with events of previous books.
What I don't like: Feels almost immature at times. Spends too much time with events of previous books, making this book feel like a fanservice at times, rather than a strong story in its own right.

This is clearly a YA novel, with basic language and stylistic choices. I've clearly come in part way through a series as the last chapters are very much tying in with other novels, which was somewhat irritating
The lead character, Menolly, struggles with her lack of confidence, often coming across as whiny. The story also tends to rely heavily on exposition, which slows the pacing.
I found it very useful as an audio to use to fall asleep.

I read this book in middle school and it has lived rent free in my head for decades. Finally got to re-read it and it absolutely holds up. McCaffrey’s world building is unmatched.
