This book was sooo good, and I thoroughly enjoyed the graphic audio. While this urban fantasy technically info-dumps at the beginning, it is written in such a way that you can breeze through the first 200 pages without paying too close attention and you can still get the gist of what is happening, with those info-dump ideas looping back. You are dropped into the world, which means if you get caught up on the info you might have a hard time getting into it. I love how Maas writes flawed characters that you still root for. And I cried multiple times in the last 30% of this book, so it was a huge winner for me. I can’t wait to start the next book!

I DNF’d the first time because my heart just wasn’t in it, but I’m really glad I came back to it! The narrator really made getting into this book SO MUCH EASIER, and it took me until about chapter 13/14 to become truly invested. I liked the buddy cop vibes and something about Hunt the fallen edgelord does it for me. At first I found Bryce kind of insufferable with a bit of a holier than thou complex but I think that her interactions with syrinx and Lehabah really humanized her and made her a bit more well rounded in the personality department. Just like any SJM book, the last 25% of the book was just a WILD time. Can’t wait to read the next two!

Hardcover. All-in-all I enjoyed this so much!  The fantasy meets murder-mystery was so fun. The world-building of Crescent City specifically was so cool- like ancient Rome meets Tokyo.

I've read the ACOTAR and TOG series too, and I really like how relatable Bryce is as a main character! The heroines of ACOTAR and TOG are so very fantastic but Bryce is just like us; she has a cat-dog, fights with her best friends, screens her parents' calls, and wears impractical shoes just for the vibes. I liked her, I liked the romantasy tropes, I appreciated the respectful yet heart-wrenching perspectives on grief, and I loved the villians. I cried twice and I'm not even a book crier!

The world-building and relationships in Crescent City are some of the most complex and immersive I’ve read recently. Everything feels truly three-dimensional, from the politics to the character development to the magic. This book is LONG and pretty dense (particularly in the first ~150 pages) but the amount of detail is what gives you such a beautifully crafted world.
